Racism

I had to bite my tongue hard today in the school staffroom. A whole bunch of 'older' (40's - 50's) teachers talking about the news and basically sprouting the most racist rhetoric I've ever heard in a public area. According to them, the terrorist problems are caused by immigration and Australia shouldn't have bothered getting people out of Lebenon.

I guess now, looking back at it, I should have said something to them. But they weren't talking to me, and I depend on good reports from those people to get work, so at the time I felt like the best thing to do was to get out of the staff room before I lost my temper/teaching position. Good thing I had playground duty.

I just can't believe people still talk like that.

Oh, they certainly do still talk like that. That's one of the reasons I rarely go into the tearoom at my work anymore.

It's a topic I rant about regularly. People's ignorance and bigotry infuriates me. As does their stupid willingness to take anything the tabloid media says as gospel.

I've had to walk out of a few staff rooms before to save my prac reports.

I can't wait for the day I'm permanent so I can get away with saying things to those sorts of people!
