Hell in a handbasket . . .
Jul. 20th, 2003 10:37 amMore reasons why I shouldn't read the news.
Protesters who burn the Australian flag will face prison terms or fines under a Bill to be introduced into Federal Parliament next month.
Violence erupted in the leafy Sydney suburb of Pennant Hills today when police blocked protesters attempting to march on the home of Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock.
AN Australian man arrested last month for possession of a single marijuana joint at Manila airport has died in jail after wardens failed to respond to his claims of fever because he was "always complaining".
"Considering that any decision by a military commission is at President Bush's pleasure, we have no confidence at all," Ms Bilney said.
US President George W Bush breathed defiance today despite a row raging over his motives for waging war on Iraq, vowing a fight to the finish in his "war on terror".
BRITISH Prime Minister Tony Blair struggled today to keep his six-day tour of East Asia on track, after a mystery death back home triggered perhaps the worst crisis in his six years in power.
Don't even get me started on the flag burning.

on 2003-07-19 09:33 pm (UTC)This isn't the first time this type of thing has been introduced, and it has been defeated before. We need to fight it.
Read a really great article recently from a US journo about why flag burning must not be made illegal. The last few lines were the killer. Need to find it.

on 2003-07-20 12:13 am (UTC)I have no problem with Americans burning American flags.
I love the WW ep "20 Hours in LA", and the line in The American President where President Shepherd asks "Someone I didn't know 10 years ago when I wasn't President did something that isn't illegal in protest against something that so many people were against that it now doesn't exist and that's the third item on the news? I'm not going to ask what the fourth item was..."
My problem is with people burning flags that aren't their own. I don't think it ought to be illegal, I simply think it ought to be done. If you want to burn a flag, burn the one that ought to mean something to you.
IOW, the legislation suggested in that article stinks. Like you didn't know that already.
