Spooks Rewatching: Episode 3.5
Sep. 27th, 2007 11:28 amA rather lengthy and thought-filled discussion . . .
3.5
In a lot of ways this is one of my favourite episodes. They're so broken.
Oh Colin and Danny at the gun range. "I'm just quite into ballistics" is such a brilliant Colin line. And the focus in his eyes when he shows Danny. Colin's a bit of a philosopher though. I've never quite figured out where that scene comes in relation to the episode - how closely it is attached. I think it does happen before the rest of the episode, but it could have happened two or three months earlier.
And Zoe's running late because she's pashing her fiance . . . I always find this scene in front of the 'New Spies' to be a little squeamish. Listening to the beginning of her speech though, with the company line, really relates on to Ruth and her story in this episode - she's become so involved in the work that she a) uses work to find an 'outside partner' and b) can't really relate to him when she meets him in the real world.
THE RED SHOES! Ruth is a ballet fan! And the fingers at the neck! And she leaves the door open for Malcolm! I adore this short scene. And the way Malcolm backs away. It's all perfect!
I love that Ruth understands the Zoe/Danny issues - I wonder who she's been talking to. Or if she's just watching . . .
Sam's appeared again. She's been rather quiet for a while. Now she's snooping around Ruth. And reporting to Harry. I wonder how long it took Harry to convince Sam to spy on Ruth. Or what she's thinking as she does it. I mean, she's got to wonder what Harry's up to. (And why do I now want to write Sam/Juliet?)
The ketchup scene is yet another one we didn't see in Australia. Poor Danny.
Oh, I do love Ruth. The way she looks at the empty seat at the restaurant. You just know her heart's beating a little faster. And then the knife falling and the hands and the eyes - that little moment is so beautifully filmed.
The ship's corridors are awful. I'm sure there's hidden meaning there . . .
I love Zoe's certainty on this, the way she's so completely against it. Her actions here, like her actions previously, her determination that there has to be a right and a wrong, builds up so beautifully to the next episode.
Adam really knows Danny - talking about being a team player to him is what convinces Danny that he has to do it. Danny yearns to be a part of the team - you see it in the way he reacts to new people around him. By playing on that part of it, Adam knows Danny's made the decision, despite his later questions and concerns.
Brother Giles is so wonderful. So is the little Ruth and Sam scene when she comes out in the dress.
"You've killed more than you know" is such an awful statement, and Keeley delivers it so beautifully. I love the way Zoe and Danny come together closer for a moment before the murder and the way the new closeness is then completely blown to pieces.
Oh, Sam's holding Ruth's hand. And there's laughter with Malcolm. That really is a lovely little scene too. The way Malcolm tries to calm Ruth down is kinda hilarious - like calming down a highly strung school child.
This episode really forges the bond between Adam and Danny. Up until the beginning of the episode he wasn't sure if Adam was right, wasn't sure if he could be trusted. But then Adam opens up, tells him more, tells him what to expect. And Danny begins to rely on Adam, begins asking Adam to give him the answers, Zoe refused to give him.
This is such a gorgeous piece of music. It sends shivers down the spine.
The little foot twitch is such meanness. And Danny crouched there, listening and watching.
"Keep talking. Just keep talking." Has to be one of my favourite lines *g* Ruth is so very awkward, and he is so very wrong for her. Do very important men usually wear their father's suits?
Danny sitting and waiting for Zoe to wake up is a little creepy. As is his manner to her. He's cut himself off to her - the things he might be able to say to Adam, he can't say to her. He just wants to make her hurt the way he does. Zoe looks so little sitting on the bed there.
The little conversation between Harry and Ruth "we can't let that sort of thing get in the way of work, can we?" is so heartbreaking. Ruth's becoming harder, more like Harry. She's putting up the shell around herself, not letting anyone in.
I actually feel sorry for Will there when Zoe breaks up with him. He's tried so hard for her, he didn't actually give her away (though he could have been more careful) and he's got no idea why she's so worked up.
And then Zoe, wanting the closeness she had with Danny. Maybe she thinks breaking up with Will will take the barrier away from between them. That they'll be able to fall into each other's hands and be there for each other. That, with Tom gone and Will proven untrustworthy, Danny's the only person she really has. (There's got to be fic there)
