You all fail, by the way. I wanted to come home and read reviews and there are very few *g*
So, after annoying the children at school all day, I finally got to see the movie at 6.20 tonight.
Overall, this was a reader's movie. There were quite a few lines I remember directly from the book, and if you hadn't read the book, you probably wouldn't follow the whole thing as well.
I loved the 'real world' beginning. Dudley makes me laugh, and his 'back up' crew are pathetic.
The Dementors were terrifying, but Arabella Figg wasn't at all like I thought she would be - I thought she would be more panicky. She grew on me though. I loved the little touch of the sprinklers running at night (I'm from Brisbane. I notice these things)
I wish Petunia had been given more time. The humanity she shows in the book is brilliant and it was missing here. Vernon was suitably horrible.
The dreams all the way through were great.
I LOOOOOVE the Order. Kingsly and Tonks were just brilliant and the scenes of them flying were just amazing. A really good transformation to the magical world.
Grimmauld Place - Harry wasn't quite 'angry Harry' enough for me here, but the extendable ear was so good. Kreacher seemed really unneccessary in the movie though.
(BTW, I'm watching Philosopher's Stone right now - they're sooo wee and little)
I really missed the Prefect storyline. I think it would have helped to isolate Harry even further.
UMBRIDGE - OMG. I detested her from the core of my little teacher's heart. I detested the write things out four times as the way to learn things and her way of teaching . . . oh, and the whole hand thing (which I was dreading) was as awful as I thought it would be. And she was just completely, perfectly terrible.
I adore McGonagall - the little height thing on the steps cracked me up, and the way she ran to help Trelawny . . .
I thought the inspections were done well - Snape was particularly good.
DA for the win. I just completely adored each and everyone of them. Especially Luna. The scene with the thestrals was excellent.
Cho and Harry - the kissing scene was nice, but the scene after was better. Much like the book.
Actually, I found the whole 'Cho gave away the secret because she was drugged' thing rather trite. It was better when they were given away because of a human, not because of a potion.
NEVILLE! I cried when he talked about his parents. He's just brilliant and wonderful, and I can't wait to find out what happens to him in book 7.
The occlumancy scenes went between disturbing and hilarious. I adored seeing Snape's vulnerabilities; though again, it wasn't made clear that Snape was acting as a double agent, so next movie may not make a lot of sense . . .
Dumbledore's exit was nice.
Did I mention that I HATE Umbridge.
Nice exit of the Weasley Twins, and I really like the way they trimmed it down to have Harry collapse then. Since we can't have the 6 hour movie . . .
Grawp - hmmmm. Still hate that storyline in the books. Thought it was pretty cringe worthy here.
The Ministry was nice at the end - I'm looking forward to getting more Ginny in movie 6. The prophecy was nicely done, but the collapsing shelves was better. I wish we'd seen how the individual characters went down - Ron's encounter with the brains, and Hermione being attacked left Harry and Neville tied together in an important way that was left here. But I loved the way he went so totally after Bellatrix. We should have found out that Neville could have been the one chosen, though.
Sirius. Hmm. The death, like in the book, wasn't immediately gripping. The slow motion scene of Lupin pulling Harry away was more effective to me.
The possession of Harry was great, except for the cheesy, publicity-type shots of Voldemort.
Luna rules.
So thats my thoughts. Now review, dammit.
