(I will get through these. I will)
Book 88: Our Enemy, My Friend by Jenny Blackman
When Father said grace he prayed for our German friends. I thought that was a bit strange. What can possibly happen to them in a quiet village like Wirreebilla, so far away from the war?
This is the second My Story book that I've read in the last little while. As I think I mentioned, the strength of these books are the different authors. Unfortunately this is also their weakness.
This is the diary of Emma, a young girl living in the Adelaide Hills in 1915, as the Australian forces begin fighting in the first world war. The diary follows the struggle of the people of German heritage in the community. The idea of this book is great - it's an interesting time in our history. Unfortunately the writing is rather poor - this is the author's first book, and apparently it's based on her grandmother's life. The subject matter gets boring really quick, and there doesn't seem to be any story line through it, unlike the 1974 book.
A 3 out of 5
