Opening Lines of 10 of my favourite books . . .
1. Harry Potter was a highly unusual boy in many ways. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: J.K.Rowling
2. There are four words Fenny Ness wished she had never spoken. The Tall Pine Polka: Lorna Landvik
3. Damon died in the third week after Pinatubo, a small, unknown volcano in the Philippines, started to belch smoke and spew ash, pushing smoke higher and higher into the stratosphere where the great up-draughts and crosswinds that swirl above the earth swept it to a height of twenty-two thousand feet and spread it like a blanket across the blue Pacific Ocean. April Fools Day: Bryce Courtenay
4. Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies’ eardrops, and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place. Anne of Green Gables: L. M. Montgomery
5. “It was a cataclysm.” Last Drinks: Andrew McGahan
6. For the first fifteen years of our lives, Danny and I lived within five blocks of each other and neither of us knew of the other’s existence. The Promise: Chaim Potok
7. James Mcfadden died in March 1905 when he was forty-seven years old; he was riding in the Driffield Point-to-Point. A Town Like Alice: Nevil Shute
8. Before you fairly start this story I should like to give you just a word of warning. Seven Little Australians: Ethel Turner
9. “You’ll be under a drape, a green paper drape, and you’ll have to lie very still.” Perfect Skin: Nick Earls
10. Thucydides the Athenian wrote the history of the war fought between Athens and Sparta, beginning the account at the very outbreak of the war, in the belief that it was going to be a great war and more worth writing about than any of those which had taken place in the past. The Peloponnesian War: Thucydides
And if that wasn't enough for you.
Ten Good Things Which Happened Today
1. I got a letter from Matt!
2. I’m back on line after spending only $11
3. I have food
4. I got a letter from Matt and he used the term ‘wibbler’
5. I’m making jelly (jell-o)
6. The Wibblers and my sister are coming over Saturday night
7. I got paid today
8. I’m not working today
9. I got a letter from Matt today and he drew me pictures
10. I watched most of the ‘State of the Union Address’ and managed not to throw up - I just yelled at the television instead.
Just a thought - a nation that attacks first loses its right to be thought of, or regarded as, noble. And those who applaud death are despicable.
(And the USA only stood up to ‘Hitlerism’ after they were attacked by Japan. Presidents should stop trying to rewrite history.)
