LAWYER and West Australian MP Julie Bishop will step into the Education, Science and Training portfolio after a cabinet reshuffle yesterday elevated Brendan Nelson to the senior role of Defence Minister.

HE'S GONE!

Thus ends the reign of Brendan Nelson, major idiot. No doubt we shall continue along the line of giving uni places to the rich through full fee places, and testing our children into oblivion with this new minister - but she might not look so smarmy doing it.

$ just raised the amusing question of whether Nelson would decide that would could circumvent military recruitment/selection procedures by offering full-fee places.

*snerkle*

I can just see it at the recruitment counter - "But Daddy said I could be a soldier"

As wonderful as this is...

DEFENSE MINISTER! Dear god we are all doomed. 10 years ago it wouldn't have matter, no one gave a shit about little old Australia, but these days.. this is very scary.

So we've gone from having Nelson in charge of the children, who are our future, to having Nelson in charge of defence, which theoretically stops us from getting blown up?

Are we entirely sure this is a good thing?

Oh, we should be hiding under the bed. But at least I'll be able to teach 'duck and cover' without Nelson smirking at me

It certainly felt like a weight coming off my shoulders when I heard that news. I know nothing about the new Minister, but she can't be as annoying as BN, surely...

No, he's not gone, he's protecting our shores now from invaders.

Thought you'd be pleased.

Julie Bishop has been Minister for Ageing up until now. She (or her flunkies) write pleasant letters once a month pointing out the latest bit of regulation expected of Nursing Homes, and which pages of the manual they've discovered have major errors this month.

Well, there's Nelson and then there's the policies he's implementing... the two might be distinguishable.

Julie Bishop is a former state mp for Western Australia and used to be the *only* Liberal mp that would deal with us (women's groups) so I had some respect for her. Smart, articulate and seemingly earnest - but we'll see how it turns out.

I have no doubt that we'll keep following bad policy in Education. It's kind of inevitable.

I'm just hoping that the attacks on teachers will lessen a little.

*sigh* What are the odds?

Still, I honestly think she's a good woman under all that conservative veneer - or she was in state politics nearly ten years ago. Hopefully there will be less rhetoric in her vitriol or less vitriol in her rhetoric - or something...
