sangerin compiled a list of Spooks Shipping Rules. I intended to compile my own list then, but of course I've only just gotten around to it. Only half of the characters are here. Spoilers through to about 3.8 - and don't spoil sangerin past that in the comments (and don't spoil me past 3.10) or we'll come and beat you up . . . *g*
Tom Quinn
Despite his status as Mr Reliable when we see him, Tom has a long history of sleeping with inappropriate people, at inappropriate times. We see a massive relapse of this with Vicki – but where in his youth he would have bailed after the first night, now he tries to 'make a go of it'. He likes to think that Ellie was perfect for him, if only he could have changed for her, but in the deepest parts of his mind he knows that isn't true. Christine, on the other hand, was right for him, and he wonders why he doesn't go and find her. He did, of course, have a relationship with Peter Salter in his youth as well as short lived affairs with Harry and Jools Siviter.
Zoe Reynolds
She's still looking for the 'right one' but has a feeling that time is running out – therefore her ill-advised, hasty engagement to Will North. She doesn't really trust anyone, and it's been the reason for more than one break up in her life. She had a thing for Tom when she started working for Section B, but she grew out of that with time. She would like to think it could work with Danny, but she has her suspicions that it wouldn't really. She turns to Tessa when she wants to play.
Danny Hunter
The playboy of the piece, with even more ill advised affairs than Tom. He thinks Maxie was the stupidest, but Katherine was the hardest. He thought there was a good chance of something between him and Sam, but then he woke up one day and realised that he didn't like her enough to go through the whole break up thing. He believes he is truly in love with Zoe, and he's frustrated that she won't return his advances.
Harry Pearce
Divorced, but not proud if it. He wishes he could have been a better husband and father. He finds he has feelings for Ruth that he hasn't had in a long time. He had a short lived, angry affair with Tom when Tom was younger, but he realised that was probably more destructive for him than it was for Tom and he broke it off. He has history with Tessa, but he doesn't like to talk about it – it still annoys him more than he would like.
Adam Carter
Slept with most of the women (and some of the men) in MI6 before he fell for Fiona. He tells himself that he is a faithful man, and he'd never do anything to hurt her – but he knows he'd sleep with someone else if the situation called for it. Likes to flirt with people to throw them off – especially people he considers to be way below his level, like Sam.
Fiona Carter
Surprised herself by marrying Adam. Before that she mostly slept with girls, but almost never for more than a night or two before moving on. She told herself that a lack of connection was vital for her work. She did have one relationship with Tessa, but the power games just about killed them both. She enjoys teasing men as part of her job.
Ruth Evershed
Is very, very lonely. She thinks, somewhere in the deep corner of her mind, that there might be something between her and Harry, but she ignores it because she wouldn't know how to go about having a relationship with him. She understands that Malcolm is in love with her in his own sweet way, but she just doesn't think of him like that. She's had a long series of crushes on people, most of them fizzling out before she does anything about them. She would have liked to have been with Danny, but she understands that he's too broken to be a decent partner. She won't admit to herself that she had deep feelings for Zoe, and she's intrigued by Christine Dale.
