Well the bastards finally did it - Backroom deal seals fate of uni guild fees"

If you have ever had a cheap meal at an Australian university refectory, if you have had a drink in an Australian university bar, if you have joined a club or society at an Australian university, if you have enjoyed an article in a student magazine, if you have needed representation, if you have complained about a poor lecturer or unfair assessment, or bought a cheap second hand book then you have benifited from student unionism. And if you think it's unfair that these things are going to be taken away from Australian students then you need to email Family First Senator Steven Fielding (senator.fielding@aph.gov.au) to register your complaint.

ETA [livejournal.com profile] yasminke reminded me about the affordable childcare and cheaper medical services which are subsidised by student union fees. These too will be gone.

In other news, I've worked 16 hours in my new job. It's pretty good, if a little boring work, and it's nice not to be working with food anymore. It's a little like a giant, noisy classroom except we get to lock ourselves into a booth. And we get to laugh at the tryhards

It was a sad moment

Did you mean "fair" or "unfair"?

Plus, you forgot the things the Family First "fights for" like affordable medical services and childcare. But the guy doesn't care: he must have gotten a promise of an office with a bigger window.

Well we don't use our shire's sporting fields or most other facilities...can we opt out of our council fees? I don't like paying for the military or politicians, can I have a cut in my taxes?

I don't understand why they couldn't see that the uni fees were equivalent to those sorts of fees.

That's the exact discussion I was having with Matt the other day. I won't start it again, though. He gets very angry about the amount of tax he pays.

*le sigh* ... *sob* ...

I guess there goes our little shelter room for when we don't have classes ... I could go without the wide screen TV and all ... but still - the uni needs those facilities - particularly when it's Sunshine Coast uni which is not close to anything ... it's a 10 minute walk to the nearest shopping centre yet alone anything else.

Oh, don't worry. Brendan Nelson says that the private sector can come in. You could end up with a MacDonalds at uni! You can pay to use the shelter room!
