Being political

melwilIn previous elections I have been an interested voter, but not necessarily proactive. This federal election has had me more riled up than ever. I'm actually scared that John Howard will be returned to power. Honestly, I can't think of anything worse for our country. (Sorry, is the Sir Joh for PM campaign still alive? That's scarier. And the plastic Malcolm Fraser dummy in Old Parliment House)
One way I've been exercising my right as a citizen of a democracy is writing emails to politicians. It's fun at the moment, because they're all trying to get your vote. You can be snarky, but they have to be polite.
I challenge all the Australians (and residents of other countries) on my friends list to write an email ot a letter to a politician or a candidate. Doesn't matter which party they're running for. Just pick an issue you care about, be it education (my baby), health, law, income rates, or more funding for the arts, and pick someone to write an email to. Complain, support, seek clarification. Take part in the democracy! Post a copy in your journal, pass the word around.
Then find a school to fly the Australian flag at. It will bring world peace and cure cancer!

In other news, Alexander Downer still hasn't done anything monumentally stupid since the campaign started :(

ETA I just managed to get my gmail codes down to three, and now I have 6 again! I'm saving one for a friend, but please if you want one, don't be shy in asking. I'll be happy to send them to anyone and their best friend!
