Fun School News
Aug. 8th, 2004 09:09 pmOne of my lecturers wants us to keep an eye out on good news stories about education, schools and teaching. So, news junkie that I am, I go out and look for it. Amongst the 'are parents getting their moneys worth at exclusive Sydney Private schools?' stories, there were also:
School's flag bid up the pole after funding has strings attached
Schools can get free Government money for a flag pole. As long as they buy the flagpole, erect a plaque acknowledging the Government's support, invite a Liberal senator to the 'opening' ceremony, and write about it in the school newsletter - and then send their receipts to the Government to pay. The Government says that it's the school's choice whether they go for this scheme or not. Or course, funding will be cut if they don't.
*grumble* enforced patriotism *grumble*
and . . .
Education grants keep the faith
You won't get funding if you don't fly a flag, but you will if you refuse to teach computer skills - despite the fact that computer skills are one of the essential things agreed on by all Australian states.
Don't get me started. I've done student teaching in a school that has $50 each year for computer repairs and replacement.
I know my country is out there somewhere

*sighs heavily* Is it wrong to hope that should Howard make another term, that we end up with a militant uprising?
