Apparently Socrates was a writer . . .

Head. Meet. Desk. Hard.

Two weeks ago I was abusing SOSE lecturers about this. Brendan Nelson deserves no less.

(For those who have no interest in Ancient History, no extant work by Socrates exists - if he ever wrote anything. The Apologia (a defense speech, often incorrectly refered to as an apology) was written by his student Plato. )

Does this mean he'll make Centrelink staff stop abusing us for having Classics degrees?

(Not that I get Centrelink these days, but it's the principle of the thing.)

I'd also like to be snarky, and wonder when Peter Carey became "classic". Mainstream ModAusLit, yes. "Classic"? Wait another 50 years.

Despite my utter hatred of the man...

I didn't read that the way you have. The quote says "I believe very strongly as a parent and as the minister in charge of education that a fundamental aim of our schools should be to to give students an understanding of the classics, including philosophy, poetry and literature," so he wasn't only talking about literature. He probably listed people whose work should be looked at, and the person who wrote the article is actually the stupid one an d just listed them all as writers.

And now I feel unclean for having defended him.
