The first year she refused to believe he didn’t celebrate Christmas.
“But you’re British, Giles,” she protested. “Didn’t you guys invent Christmas?”
“As amazing as it seems,” he replied, taking a heavy pile of books from her, “no, we didn’t.”
She left a package of Christmas candy on his desk, unaware that he was still working his way through them when Easter came around.

The second year they all pooled their money together to buy him an old book Willow had found in a second hand book store two towns over. They gave it to him the week before Christmas because they were too excited to wait.
“Do you like it Giles?” Willow was standing next to Oz, practically bouncing out of her colourful running shoes.
“You’ve got to be the only guy in the world who wants something dusty and old for Christmas,” Xander added. “It must reach you on a higher level.”
“I paid for it too,” Cordelia said. “I can’t believe that a tattered old book could cost so much money.”
“Thank you all,” he said. “It means a lot to me.”
Buffy laughed. It was a nice sound to hear, joyful. “Merry Christmas Giles.”

The third Christmas they forgot.
Giles spent Christmas evening reading and listening to old records. When he closed his book he realised he remembered none of it.

They spent the fourth year together, eating a huge dinner with Dawn and Joyce. At the end of the evening Buffy pulled him aside.
“It’s not much,” she shrugged. “You know with mom being so sick and all.”
He pulled the tissue paper aside. Inside lay a framed photo of the two of them. “It’s lovely, Buffy.”
She grinned. “Merry Christmas, Giles.”
