Still sick - bleurgh
Jun. 29th, 2003 11:38 pmThe sickness that I thought would wear off after a day of very little eating and lots of laying and sitting down is as bad as ever. I hope it's not food poisoning.
Seems that work has been swapping around hours again without telling anyone. I don't mind extra hours, but I like to know I have them - especially when I'm sick and have to get someone else to cover them, or I have things already planned. Grr.
In other news, I finally put my thoughts on OotP into a coherant form.
My thoughts on Order of the Phoenix
So they're a little late, and probably a little scattered, and my sister has my copy of the book, so bear with me for a little while.

Time I began reading OotP: 2.30pm Saturday June 21st
Time I finished reading OotP: 10.30pm Saturday June 21st
Things I really liked about OotP:
Dumbledore's Army – I loved the idea of such an odd bunch of students (especially students from Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw) getting together for a common purpose. I also loved watching Harry grow up while he taught the classes, realising that he was good at something besides flying, and taking pride in other's acheivements.
Aunt Petunia – It was the first time that Petunia seemed important, both to Harry and the reader. Before she was overshadowed by Dudley and Vernon, both big (literally) characters. Her only defining characteristic was that she was nosy. In OotP we (and Harry) understand better that she had a past before she was Vernon's wife, that she is a person in her own right. And furthermore, a person whose powers are important to Harry and his well being.
Nervy!Neville – While Harry was growing up by being really angry and realising that sometimes adults really suck, Neville was growing up in his on way. He became more confident in himself, starting with the plant and the common room password, then through DA and even the OWLs where Snape couldn't terrorise him. He also began moving out of the shadow of his parents – even though it as a shadow no one besides Harry knew about. The ending battle, where he played such a big role, was final proof that he could handle himself, even after he broke his father's wand.
Snape – His rather involved role in the Order of the Phoenix, the meeting with Harry and Sirius, the private lessons and then the memories he kept in the Pensieve. We've gone some way to understanding why Snape's such a broody bastard, though it would be interesting to know if there's any particular reason he's transferred the grudge over to Harry. The ending, when Harry didn't think of going to Snape, frustrated me – but I wonder if Snape knew he was overlooked and what he would think of that.
McGonagall – A long time favourite who really stood out in OotP. Highlights include her assurance to Neville that he could pass his Transfiguration OWLs, forcing Harry to eat Ginger Newts while telling him to be careful, her treatment of Umbridge when her class was inspected, her comforting of Trelawney – despite what she's said in the past, her careful participation in the disobedience campaign (“It screws the other way”), running out to help Hagrid, and her triumphant return.
Things that pissed me off / upset me about OotP
Dumbledore - I just didn't like him. I didn't like finding out that he was flawed – in a purely emotional sense. I think this was because, for the first time, I emphasised more with Harry than with the adults. I could feel Harry's disappointment in Dumbledore and was confused with Dumbledore's refusal to just tell him more.
Hermione's persistence with SPEW – Hermione's supposed to be smart, she's still trying to fit in with the wizarding world – surely she can put two and two together and realise that the House Elves are just fine and they don't want to be free. It was a silly plot point and I don't believe it served any real purpose besides making a point about Kreacher (which could have been done without bobble hats), bringing Dobby in (surely he can clean Gryffindor Tower whenever he wants to see Harry – or just come in like he did in PoA) and protecting Dobby's head against the wall. Get over it already.
The Giant Plot line: Sure, it might prove important in later books. But in this one it felt tacked on, like it needed to be said and there was no where else to put it.
Favourite Characters: Hermione, Snape (well no surprise there), Lupin, Neville, Ron, Harry, Fred and George, Ginny, Tonks, McGonagall, Lockhart
Characters that made me go hmmm: Cho, Luna, Kreacher
Characters that I disliked in this book: Percy, Dumbledore, Hagrid
Reasons to believe that [Bad username or site: ”lizbee” @ livejournal.com] ate JKR's brain
-Wardrobes that try to kill
-Giant squid!
-Snape/Lily – ness
-The Quibbler – a shout out if I ever heard one
-A character called Tiberius . . .
Bold predictions
-Harry will continue to learn something from Snape, while learning more about him. They'll never like each other though.
-Snape's role will increase in the Order of the Phoenix and he will play an important part in the downfall of Voldemort
-Harry will learn more about James and Lily. His father will be partially redeemed, but Harry won't forget Snape's memory. He will begin to see a closer link between himself and Lily
-The following people will be important: Petunia, Mrs. Lestrange, the Bones, Percy
-Neville will die . . .
Feeling confused about a few things at the moment. Like with my thoughts on OotP I want to think them through a bit before writing about them.
There's a whole heap of sirens going down the main road at the moment, that's never a good sign.
Think I'm going to put myself back to bed and hope that I wake up feeling better in a happier mood.
