3 Bens and some random quotage
Mar. 15th, 2003 12:43 pmWell - it's quite possible that a mini bus (carrying Ben Lee, Ben Folds and Ben Kweller) just ran me over. I am buggered.
The concert was brilliant, but for a long time that was looking doubtful. See the concert was supposed to begin at 7pm. At 6.55pm they finally opened the doors (Matt and I had been waiting since 6pm) We rushed in, made a bee line for the front (more about that later) and proceeded to wait.
And wait. Meanwhile, we had hoards of teeny boppers (argh - all ages concert) pushing their way through and managing to elbow lots of people.
At 8.15pm the roadies came out to tune up the guitars and set out the play lists. By then we were singing our own versions of Ben Folds Five songs (give me my ticket back, give me my ticket back - you bitch)
At 8.25pm a bunch of hangers on came out and stood at the back of the stage - including Claire Danes!
At 8.30pm the Three Bens finally made their way on stage. The young girl next to me exclaims: "Ben Lee looks exactly like he's supposed to!" And he did, which was cool.
Ben Folds heads for the drums (wow, by the way - almost as good as Darren Jesse) while the other two pick up guitars - finally, the waiting is over. Ben Kweller's songs are first - I don't know them, but they have a good feel and I know I'll be huting out his CD. Ben Folds does some piano playing for him on one of the songs. Then the three come out together and do a Bens' song - before going into Ben Lee's songs.
I'm not a big Ben Lee fan, so I didn't know any of his songs. I did have fun though, watching Claire Danes' go nuts up the back. We learn that the Bisbane concert is their first ever together and suddenly feel very special. Ben Lee does a good job, but I'm beginning to feel the waiting, and my energy is flagging.
Then . . . Ben Folds comes out!! (*wibble, wibble*) he takes to the piano and we all think that he and Ben Lee are going to do a Ben Folds song - but no - instead they sing 'I Touch Myself' - muck it up briefly and then instruct each other to take it back to the 'sexy bit' (*die*)
Then the good bit. Two of the annoying teeny boppers infront of me (I'm about 4 people back from the stage) go. I'm almost at the front! Ben Folds goes into 'Zac and Sara' followed up by 'Kate'. Then the other two girls go and I am - I swear - directly in front of Ben Folds with only one person in front of me (to the side so I had a clear view) You should have seen my squeeing. If he had reached directly out - he would have been touching me. I could see the lines on his cord pants.
Ben plays 'One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn faces' (and it goes off as usual) followed by 'Evaporated' (*dies again*), 'Philosophy' (*dies again*) and 'Not the Same' (Complete with singing - it's a full house and a good half of the audience are Ben Folds fans - it goes off) - I could actually watch him going rank on the piano in 'Philosophy' - he did it similer to the Ben Folds Live album but even better.
Then the other two Bens come out and help him do 'Missing the War' - Ben Kweller on drums and Ben Lee on guitar - it's like Ben Folds Five!! But with a more rock bent.
Suddenly all three are on guitar and we're wondering what's going on. Ben Folds tells us how he wrote a song originally on guitar and the guys persuaded him to play it that way. Then he starts playing Brick. And the other guys join in. And . . . wow. It was obviously a difficult song for him to play, but it was amazing to atch and it sounded beautiful. It was the first time I ever saw 'Brick' live, and I was close to tears.
Then it's two other Three Bens songs, a plug for the EP (only available at the concert - whee!) and the concert is over. We push our way out, grab merchandise and it is all done. (BTW - no broken piano. They showed restraint)
In other news, the Courier Mail quoted a 'White House Official' in today's paper:
" "Boom, boom, we're going in hard and fast," the official said.
"By this time next week, sit by your TV and get ready to watch the fireworks."
Thanks, but no thanks. I think I'll wait until Riverfire.

on 2003-03-18 05:06 pm (UTC)The waiting was even worse at the Saturday one. The support act (Melissa George, she wasn't too good) came on at 8:45, played til 9:25, and the Bens didn't get onstage until 10. We were right at the front and I got to poke Ben Lee's shoe, though :-)
