Less talking about this one, but I've tried for deeper thoughts.

2.2

I couldn't resist watching another episode.

There's so much to like about this episode. To begin with - Tessa, Ruth!, and Christine Dale cracking onto Tom while he's jumped into bed with psycho Vicki. Then there's the controversial part - the fact that this was an episode with a large amount of scenes set in a mosque/community centre, which was home to a 'nest of angels'.

Tom is showing his cracks more clearly - he's disoriented to a certain extent, not really sure where to put his feet. Khaldun refers to him as the one with the eyes, when he looks through the hole in the door. I find this interesting for some reason - I think I need to take some more time to nut that one out.

Ruth had such high expectations of MI5, didn't she? And it was almost like she expected herself to change when she got there, to be more confident. The beginning makes her story arc even more tragic - but whose story isn't tragic here.

Rachid ia almost a cult leader in this episode - he is not preaching a religion, he is manipulating the young to twist them into his own shape. The chanting, the fear, the good words for the young boys.

Interesting - the mirroring between Ruth- her newness and eagerness, and Khaldun, who comes in so weary and wise to the ways of the world. And yet they both want to take action MI5 is not permitted to take: Ruth wants to close the mosque down, Khaldun wants to close Rachid down. They are othered by their newness, their inability to understand how the system works.

The systems, the procedures, are at the core of this episode. At the end, Tom tells Khaldun that he needs to walk away from the boy, that they have procedures for this sort of thing. Khaldun, as he does throughout, disregards the procedures. In the end it takes his life.
