Happiest birthdays to Amanda !- wish I was around to celebrate it with you

~*~

I'm strangely emotional at the moment. I feel like I'm just seconds away from tears or hysterical laughter.

I tried to get a mobile phone today, but apparently, I'm not allowed. The guy said I would need my father or boyfriend to sign a contract. I can't believe I'm a 22 year old woman, with a great savings record, who always pays her bills and I can't get a $33 phone contract even though that's the one I'm paying for now and have been paying for for the last two years.

I'd go pre paid, but the phone's nowhere near as good, and I hate it when people tell me they can't ring because they're out of credit.

A book by John Birmingham . . . kinda like The Revenge of Lord Vodkamort without Harry Potter and with more runs to Donut King . . .

If they say you need a husband or boyfriend or father to sign the contract, you can sue them for sexual discrimination. A friend of mine recently sued a kitchen renovation company for demanding she get a man to cosign the purchase order.

I don't think it was company policy - I think my mother could sign it under company policy. The guy just never thought to ask if my mother would be able to do it, or if I had an older sister who could sign the contract. It was an individual being sexist - so we just won't get my phone there. I don't have a proper credit check, apparently, even though I pay bills with my name on them all the time

The most amazing city I've ever been to in my life. We went when I was 12. We went to Fisherman's Wharf, rode the cable car, went to a huge book store, FAO Schwartz, Macy's, ate out, and then drove across the Golden Gate bridge. The whole city has this really wonderful feeling

Whether the guy didn't think, or not, it's still... ~sigh~

Did I tell you about the question on the Austudy form about whether I share a house with anyone of the opposite sex? It's a question to make sure I'm not in a de facto relationship, but, hello? Are they in the 19th Century?

(Of course, they also don't seem to have heard of the concept of "housesharing"... think I should suggest they go see "He died with a felafel in his hand"? Or any episode of "Secret Life", for that matter?)

That's ridiculous! When I was barely 18, I could get a plan on my own, no signature! All I had to have was a credit card they could debit if I ran off and didn't pay my bills.

OUTRAGE! I can't believe that! Did you complain long and loud about it>? In this day and age - that's so - so - patriarchal - and - condescending - and - I'm just so outraged!!

I'd love to know what company told you that. Then I could sue them.

I was actually going to suggest a similar but different approach.. What I did was get a Visa Debit Card and use that. Looks like a credit card, sounds like a credit card, acts like a credit card, but uses money from your own account like a normal savings card does. You can get them without any hassles from St George bank (damn.. I sound like a sales rep :))

That should get you through.. I managed to do it with that and an ABN to go onto a business plan.. if you have any trouble, give me a yell and I'll see if I can help (I've got a lot of friends in the telecomms industry)

Good luck! :)
