Ruby Hunter

Ruby Hunter, the first Australian Indigenous woman to be signed by a major record company died overnight.

I found Ruby Hunter's voice through my beloved Seachange soundtrack. When you listen to her voice you can hear life in it, and I adore Aurukun Moonlight. It's a sad loss for Australian music.

Until two seconds ago, when Kerry O'Brien said that her family had given permission for her name and image to be screened, I was *incredibly* worried that all these tributes were happening against tradition. I mean, I remember when the Chair of the Congress Presbytery in the NT died, and I couldn't find out *who* it was because of the naming traditions.

O'Brien gave viewers a warning: the 7pm News didn't, and I'm kind of steaming about that.

I was a little worried, which was why I used ABC sources since they're pretty good about it. Surprised by the 7pm news - SBS warned.

I suppose from her family's perspective, her story is an important one and should be told.

~nods~

And I realise of course that I should have said Law rather than tradition. 'Cause it is.

Her death is a very sad loss for all of us. I found her via Archie Roach (and I can't remember when I first heard him) and thought she was amazing. She seems to have been an incredible woman.
