Book 118: The Blue Castle by L. M. Montgomery
Like Jane of Lantern Hill, Valancy is kept down by an overbearing family. Then one day she doesn't feel well and she makes a trip to the doctor that will change everything. The doctor is forced to rush off, and so he sends her a letter telling her that her life is too be shortened - that she only has a year to live. Valancy sets out on a wild rampage of independence, leaving home, working and eventually falling in love with and marrying someone completely inappropriate.
Valancy is another lovely creation of L. M. Montgomery, becoming spirited and independent. The book is lovely, but I did get a little bogged down in the nature descriptions. I picked the ending, but that did not effect my enjoyment of the book. Overall, a book that I really enjoyed.
Book 105: School at the Chalet by Elinor M Brent-Dyer
This is the first Chalet school book that I have been able to finish. Fittingly it is the first of the series. And having finished it, I realised the big problem I was having with the books was all the traditions and customs that I didn't understand.
The first book deals with the independent Madge and her sister Joey who take off to Switzerland to begin/attend a boarding school. At this stage the school is small and the students engage in small adventures, while founding their school.
This is a really good beginning and it reminded me why I enjoyed the Malory Tower books so much. The episodic nature of the books sometimes annoy me - I'd like the story to be more involved, with threads going the whole way through. But overall, I'm very glad I got through it all.
Book 112: The Feud in the Chalet School by Elinor M Brent-Dyer
This book deals with the aftermath of a school nearby the Chalet School burning down, and the girls of that school being forced to join in the traditions and customs of the Chalet School. Another fairly episodic book, the main themes are about acceptance, and basically the fact that the Chalet school is full of 'Good Eggs'
Like the first Chalet School book, this book explained the customs and traditions of the school and therefore was easier to read and understand. I felt like there was sometimes a little too much preaching about how great the Chalet School is, but that's to be expected, I guess. Basically a good read for reading while walking to the shops.
I have a tonne more books to review, but they'll just have to wait for a little while.
